Solar vs Hardwired Post Lights: Which Should You Choose?

What "hardwired" actually involves

A mains-powered post light needs electricity brought to the post. In practice that usually means digging a trench from your house or an existing outdoor circuit, running rated outdoor cable through conduit, and having it connected by a qualified electrician. Depending on where you live, outdoor electrical work may also need a permit and inspection.

There's also the matter of where the trench goes. A driveway pillar often sits on the far side of paving, a lawn, or a planted bed, and getting a cable there without tearing something up is frequently the sticking point.

What solar involves

You place the light on the post and screw the base down. That's the whole job. No cable, no trench, no electrician, no permit, and no addition to your electricity bill.

It also means you can change your mind. If you rebuild the fence, move a pillar, or decide the light looks better somewhere else, you unscrew it and move it.

Where hardwired genuinely wins

Solar's real limitation, stated plainly

Solar post lights are charged by daylight, so how long they stay lit depends on how much sun they got. In summer, with the panel in direct sun, you'll get a long evening. In midwinter, with short overcast days, the run will be shorter. That's true of every solar fixture on the market, whatever the marketing says.

Two things help. Place the light where it gets direct daytime sun rather than dappled shade. And use a timer if the fixture has one — setting a four-hour run after dusk spends a shorter winter charge on the hours you actually want light, instead of fading out at two in the morning when nobody is looking.

Batteries also degrade over years of charge cycles, as they do in any rechargeable device, and will eventually need replacing.

What about low-voltage systems?

Low-voltage landscape lighting sits between the two. A transformer plugs into an outdoor outlet and steps mains power down, then cable runs to the fixtures. It's less involved than full mains wiring and often doesn't need an electrician, but you're still burying cable and you still need an outlet within reach.

It's a good option if you're lighting a whole garden with many fixtures. For two lights on two gate posts, the effort rarely pays off.
